It's not pretending that they'll spend like a big market team. It's refusing to excuse them for treating the median payroll like a favor. https://twitter.com/Gnome89/status/1351897613877043201
The White Sox pay no rent. They have little debt. They have no bad contracts. Their payroll is barely above what it was 10 years ago in NON-adjusted dollars. They said the money would be spent. There are so many reasons to ask for better, even if you don't expect it.
Actually, they're still $2M behind their 2011 payroll at the moment. Again, not adjusting for inflation. https://twitter.com/colintj/status/1351902460080762880
Yes. Before, people would point to Danks/Shields/Dunn/Rios/whoever as reasons why they had to cut corners in free agency. There are no such excuses now. https://twitter.com/DJSimon4/status/1351904002280194050
Contrary to popular belief, an inefficient contract is not the worst thing to happen to a team. Jayson Werth turned out to be money decently spent, because by becoming regular contenders, the Nats could expand the payroll to absorb some excess. https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/was-jayson-werths-contract-with-the-nationals-in-2011-really-that-bad/
They could have had better teams earlier if they weren't hellbent on suppressing payroll for reasons that wouldn't pay off. For instance, they could have signed Lance Lynn as a free agent instead of trading a decent arm for him for his last year. https://twitter.com/SoxFanChris72/status/1351905079369064448
