1/ Just made the mistake of checking out the analysis of attendance to live lessons per “ability” sets in my school.

2/ Is anybody as bothered as I am by this impression that we are just helping widen the gap between the students with good learning and living environment at home and those who do not have this?
3/ A quick look at our school attendance to French live lessons in KS3.
Can you guess which groups are what some teachers/SLT call “bottom sets”?

4/
Yes, you got it right!
X/Y4 groups are supposed to be the lower sets, X5 being SEN classes.
Surely, according to the ability setting argument, this would mean that these need more support with their learning, therefore should attend more live lessons.
But... are they?

5/ No. Why?
Because most of them have been sent paper work packs, because they do not have access to the internet, a working laptop, or carers to help them manage their timetable during the day.

6/ Of course, accessing would be less of an issue for most of these students, if @educationgovuk was providing laptops and internet connection for free for all of them.
But that’s not the case, is it?

7/ It won’t come as a surprise, but I do not believe the evidence for ability setting or streaming is strong enough (or even there) to support what is still happening in many schools in the UK.
8/ And I believe, looking at our numbers, that we - School Trusts, big groups like @Google @Apple @MicrosoftUK , the government (Hello, @BorisJohnson !) - are not supporting the students who need our support the most.
9/ My school last week : “Thank you […] We’ve had nearly 800 students accessing live lessons and submitting work last week. […] it is working.”
Well, it is working ... for 9X1.
But what about 8X5 ?”
Well, we’ve sent paper work to complete.

10/ So, EduTwitter, I guess my questions are:
How is your school dealing with these isues?
How are you managing the feeling of being useless and not able to make a change?
