Some ways I think you can be a better ally to the neurodiverse community

18+ only! This is an NSFW Twitter version

From a neurodiverse person ❤️

1. Educate yourself about things you don’t know, like why AutismSpeaks is a hate group, the problem with Sia, why the word retard or retarded is a slur and should only be used by those who can reclaim it, why saying autism when you mean weird behavior is ableist etc.
2. This one should be quite obvious but do not speak over us, if neurodiverse people tell you not to do or say something don’t say shit like “this wasn’t problematic 10 years ago” “my brother is ___ and he doesn’t care” you should listen and learn, not deflect.
3. Rt, comment like and spread content by neurodiverse creators. Use your platform to rt gofundme links or people in need.
4. If a neurodiverse person speaks out about something or makes an informative thread about a topic that needs more awareness, spread it!
5. Use tone tags! These are little letters after sentences what come after a / and it helps us understand what tone of voice you’re using and what you want to convey, this makes misunderstandings less likely!
6. If someone tells you they are neurodiverse, ask them respectful questions, DO NOT SAY THEY DONT LOOK LIKE THEY HAVE THAT DISORDER, it’s ableist! Ask things like

- what does that mean for you

- how can I help the best if you get overwhelmed

And so on.
6. Lastly, listen to us and don’t say we’re snowflakes and sensitive when we speak up about something. You’re an adult, act like one and listen.

Do not infantilize us, we’re not less capable or less aware less able or less than anyone because our brains work a different way. We’re adults, and we deserve the same respect as anyone else. Neurodiversity isn’t cute, stimming and tics isn’t cute.
+

Do not get mad at us if we don’t understand something, calmly explain to the best of your ability, it takes a lot for us to ask when we don’t understand since we’re often taught it makes us seem stupid, have patience and answer questions even if they may seem silly.
