Government made R12 Billion available to fund free education for students as a response to outcries of Students in 2015. Banks, Political Parties and even NGOs like OUTA came out in defiance of this program and supported the contingency loan program which cost Govt R 150, Billion
Government under President Zuma increased NSFAS recipients from households who earn R220 000 p.a as it was for +10 years to R350 000 p.a which saw a huge number of students getting access to Higher Institutions of Learn as over 70% of SA Households earn below R350 000 per annum
NSFAS set up a System to make accommodations available by acquiring old buildings to be refurbished and be used to provide residential areas for students who can't afford rental fees as most institutions are found in cities where rents range from R1200 to R2300 pm it's expensive
As part of alleviation of poverty among the Youth, President Zuma in 2017 created The DST-NRF internship program where the Government pays unemployed graduates to get experience in Private Sector. Internships with salaries ranging from R6000 to R8000 pm depending on qualification
