I think every Calvinist should do a neutral study into Arminianism (by not reading a resource specifically geared to criticising the other side), and Arminians should do vice versa.

Though there are differences, they are not complete opposites.
Both classical Calvinists and Arminians believe in total depravity.

There is an assumption that Arminianism is the complete opposite for every point of TULIP. But that's not necessarily true.
Both Classical Arminians and Calvinists believe in Penal substitution, though there may be disagreements in how it is effected.
One point they may disagree in is the 'perseverance of the saints'.

But even then, it's not that simple.

Classical Arminians do believe that believers can fall away. Not by mistakes but by deliberate renouncication of faith (apostasy).

Outside of that, they are secure.
I'll probably add some more points to this thread later (time to tune into what's happening in America)

The point is, if we humbled ourselves, we may realise that we have more things in common than we initially realised.
