Been watching a lot of Simpsons again in Lockdown which is hardly a show that gets under rated on this site but I do still think it's amazing how accurately a mainstream family comedy show repeatedly called the preconditions for Trump.
The spirit sapping petty corruption of local institutions, the perception of distance/self-interest of politicians, the anti-intellectualism, the closeness of seemingly non political people to very violent mass expression ("can't this town go one day without a riot?") etc etc.
The extent to which lower middle class white (or yellow...) people could simultaneously be often inexplicably privileged and yet also very precarious.
I didn't live in America thru the 90s and 00s so maybe all this stuff was just really commonplace but it doesn't seem to exist in other comparable media?
*lower middle/upper working. The show's inconsistent canon makes it hard to precisely place the professional status of homer's job ("according to your resume you invented this machine!")
