They descend of Indian nomadic groups like Dom, Banjara, Gujjar, Dhangar tribes in Northwest India from modern day states like Rajasthan, Sindh, Punjab and Gujarat!

They tend to be very entrepreneurial and tricky in mind, which is understandable from their origins.

Sara e Kali (Sarah the Black), a Christianised version of Goddess Kali is their patron saint btw. They themselves I believe, made a christian version of her when they took refuge in Christian lands of Europe.

Wherever they went, they adopted the local religion.

They have been one of the most persecuted ethnicities in the world though. One of only European ethnicities to face slavery, right from the Byzantine Empire.

The 1926 "Law for the Fight Against Gypsies, Vagrants and the Workshy" was enforced in Bavaria.

Nazi Germany carried out a genocide against the community what is referred to as Porajmos. They were considered "menace" and "plague".

Nine representatives of the Romani community in Germany were asked to compile lists of "pure-blooded" Romanis to be saved from deportation.

To conclude, Romani language is very similar to Indo-Aryan languages.
