This is a really good thread about "this is too expensive" that both designers and dyers see a lot.

But there is also another type of comments we need to talk about. The comments where people don't use their inside voices. https://twitter.com/HunterHammersen/status/1351636309769596930
"That colour combination is ugly"
"Cool yarn! [Other dyer] does it better though"
"Cute. Looks like an old Stephen West pattern."
"You should have twisted the cables the other way."

Tonnes and tonnes of these type of comments.
There is a whole lot of "negging" going on and I'm not sure why these comments need to exist.

And normally they are directed at female dyers and designers. Why?
I think partly it is rooted in jealousy, partly it is rooted in misogyny, and partly it is just plain rude to tell a creative that their work sucks/is ugly/has been done better/etc.

We don't need to be endlessly optimistic, but maybe don't be endlessly rude to other ppl?
If you don't like something, feel free to tell your friends. Don't stand at somebody's booth at a yarn show (remember those?) and talk loudly about how shit their dyeing technique is.

And ask yourself: are you actively resenting other women for having a successful craft biz?
I genuinely think a lot of online rudeness can be explained by "why is this woman doing what I would like to be doing?" -- and that is on you, not the dyer or the designer.

Take responsibility for your own feelings and stop projecting them on to others.
If you think "oh I don't do this!" try tracking what kind of comments you leave on people's posts - are the comments you leave for male designers & dyers more positive than the ones you leave for women?

And it's okay to unfollow people whose work you genuinely don't like!
Anyway, don't be a jerk. Punch Nazis. Eat what you like. Trans rights are human rights. Pay people a fair wage. And have a good day x
