In a gold rush: Build shovels.

When hordes of people are hoping to strike it lucky:

- Starting newsletters, to be the next @tferriss
- Creating podcasts, to be the next @joerogan

The real opportunity?

Creating tools for the on-rushing crowds.

CUE @Janel’s NewsletterOS:
What is it?

A comprehensive Notion dashboard with frameworks, templates, resources, and tools to start + grow a newsletter.

Why do I love this idea?
Janel monetises a tool she had built for herself:

- She runs her own newsletter
- She researches best practice for it
- She keeps a personal Wiki of all that information
- And creates tools off the back of it

Then opens it up to the world, for a fair price.

Pretty cool right?
Why does it work?

As @mubashariqbal & @csallen said recently:

"In a Gold rush - build shovels"

And right now, people are digging:

- Over 100k @SubstackInc newsletters
- Over 1.7 million Podcasts

The real opportunity can be building tools for those on-rushing crowds.
Why is this an ‘OS’, not another e-book?

In a world of PDF guides, unique ways of providing information stand out.

An ‘Operating System’ captures the imagination in a way an e-book cannot.

But is that just marketing?
I tried it to find out.

How does it work?

Powered by Notion - the OS is hosted in your personal workspace.

This makes it super easy to use the tools provided.
I can:
- Add my own notes
- Complete check lists
- Start personalising templates

What’s so special about that?
Taking action = Deriving value.

Oh sh*t. I actually did something.

Made some progress.

Did a thing.

You’re much more likely to value a product when it makes you take action:
The reviews speak to that from:

@nocodelife
@MarkMulvey
@luisabrimble
@philipptemmel_

How does @JanelSGM ensure she provides that kind of value?

An important element is pricing.
The success of @dvassallo info products is built on this basis:

- Over deliver for the price point
- Reach many more people
- Receive many more reviews
- Gain substantial momentum

Because this is more than just a product... https://twitter.com/JanelSGM/status/1351672469665546242
Product as platform.

Sure, the OS is a standalone product.

But it’s more than that.

It makes Janel a domain expert: think Newsletters > think OS > think @JanelSGM.

She can use it to grow her own online audience, her newsletter & launch complimentary products.

Speaking of...
The numbers?

As of this week:

- Newsletter OS has sold 671 units @ $49 = $32,879
- Podcast OS (in pre-order) 115 units @ $30 = $3,452

That’s super impressive.

And now, by partnering with experts in other domains like @JKaplan1, @JanelSGM can build up a suite of OSs.

📈📈📈
Ok.

I hope you enjoyed that 🧵 & made it this far.

If you did, I appreciate you!

Do me two things:

1) Let me know what you think of Newsletter OS and give @JanelSGM a follow?

2) Tell me which other prolific Twitter creators I should be looking at?

Cheers,
Callum
