Because of #covid19 we now spend a lot of time interacting with “talking heads” on the displays of our digital devices. What does this mean? Is this our future? Is this the #newnormal? @GenZ_Oulu @UniOulu @SuomenAkatemia (thread 1/15)
While the pandemic will not continue forever, it is likely to have long-term impact: more interactions (work, schools, families) will take place remotely, over digital video connections in the future. (2/15)
We now have more experience in interacting and collaborating remotely. Remote possibilities to interact are often beneficial. But it cannot be assumed that remote interaction is a solution to everything – or the #newnormal.(3/15)
We know little about the impact of this sudden shift on how we will interact and what our everyday lives will look like in the future. There are many questions: (4/15)
What do people think about remote interactions? When and for what reason have people interacted remotely? How do remote interactions compare to co-present interactions (i.e., physical, face-to-face interactions)? (5/15)
When does remote interaction support work or studies? How does it support them? When is it better or necessary to meet in person? (6/15)
What is the impact of the increase in digital interactions (and fewer “physical” interactions) for human well-being, family connections and friendships? (7/15)
What about different users? The aging population? People with special needs or limited resources? Why do some people refuse the use digital technologies? #digitaldeniers #digitalgap. Don’t assume a user! (8/15)
What do people really do in remote interactions? What practices support online interaction and collaboration? When is remote interaction not successful, useless or pointless? (9/15)
What about “hybrid” or “blended” interactions? What happens when remote and co-present interactions are combined in the same situation? (10/15)
What about more revolutionary solutions: virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality? What will new “Social VR” look like? Does it have the potential to make remote interaction better? (11/15)
What will the future of remote interactions look like? How can our current experiences be used to develop remote interactions for the future? How can the experiences inform the design of new remote interaction systems and solutions? (12/15)
Digital remote interaction must be viewed with a critical eye. It is not practical to move all communication to digital online systems. (13/15)
Remote interactions cannot replace co-present interactions. It will be important to meet friends, family members, colleagues, and peers; it will be important to able to plan, collaborate, innovate, discuss, and converse – face to face. (14/15)
Plenty of interesting work is being done on remote interaction by @OittinenTuire, @LKohonenAho, @heidispets, @5tuartreeves, @HindmarshJon, and many others! What do you think? Please share your thoughts! (thread 15/15)
