Grading *most* Indonesian students’ exam be like...

Q: “Explain why Cold War is a critical event in IR in 1500 words!”

A: “So Cold war is a period where... *proceed to spend 1300 words to explain the definition rather than the answer.”

Yep, the last 200 words is the answer.
My lecturer (now colleague) @aviechu, said:

“Merangkai kata-kata dengan singkat itu jauh lebih sulit dibandingkan dengan menulis essay panjang”

So protip: Word limit is set as the max amount. We will still need elaboration on your answers, but yes, you can write less than that.
"Tapi kan banyak dosen yang ga baca"
"Dosennya juga banyak yang cuma absen"

Do you really want to risk it?
I read all of the students essays and give 200-250 words feedback to each of them (if possible).

You are writing NOT to please us, but to practice for your future.
"The 1500 word limit does not help anyone. I will just answer straight away without it."

It helps us the lecturers to grade how well you manage your words. Because let's face it, students can write very short or very long answers, both which is not good.
What you should do instead of writing 1300 words of intro to fill up space?

Elaborate your answer! You can use that space to explain your logic and the reason behind it. Then in the end, wrap it again with a conclusion.
Seeing this ineffective word use in many students, I believe the problem is not within the "word limit", because word limit is implemented in EVERY universities in the world.

I think it has something to do with our "basa-basi" writing culture, which should be changed.
I'm still learning myself. But academic writing doesn't need your "basa-basi," because your essay doesn't have feeling and your lecturers are not Pak/Bu Camat.

It needs argument, structure, and explanation. Here a protip from @ShofwanAlBanna https://twitter.com/AirSong21/status/1352074555003555840?s=20
Btw, tweet ini dibuat simply untuk point out bahwa gaya menulis yang bertele2 (yang umum di mahasiswa Indonesia) kurang baik, disertai dengan alasan dan protipnya.

Jangan dibawa keluar konteksnya. Tweet tentang sistem pendidikan indonesia kita simpan untuk thread lain aja ya :)
