That whole sequence in the trailer implicating it’s gonna be Finn vs Kylo? It’s to hide the “twist” that Rey is a Jedi. Finn had nothing going into TLJ. Rian had to bring back *Phasma* to redo his story properly & breathe life into him. And then JJ tossed Finn away a SECOND TIME.
Literally, Rey, Finn, Poe and Kylo are all markedly different *characters* once they leave Jaaku. Then Han shows up and brings with him a madlib of ANH. Not a single one of them gets a pay off thet the Jaaku opening that suckered us in, deserves.

Finn may have been marketed to face Kylo but *in the actual movie* his most dramatic fight is with a faceless stormtrooper (and he’s saved by super-Han), after which he gets beaten by Kylo who then inexplicably loses to super-Rey.

In TLJ, Finn stars where he was left: a bumbling self-centered coward. TLJ exposes that (DJ), he faces his demons (Phasma) and then before his self-hatred as First Order, failure & coward consumes him, he’s forgiven & loved (Rose). He’s now a key rebel with unique motivation.
Then Abrams came back and:

• Sidelined Finn into Rey’s sidekick
• Suggested Finn and the ONLY OTHER TWO BLACK PEOPLE IN THE CAST ARE ALL RELATED
