Today is a day of celebration in the US, and around the world - that the nightmare of Trump in the White House is over, and the opportunity of kind, progressive leadership in the shape of Joe Biden. But while we should celebrate today, there's so much work to do tomorrow.
Trumpism is not even close to being dead. He has poisoned the well, and those in the GOP who enabled him remain in office. The Republican Party remains wedded to a disastrous politics which is anti-democratic, and actively harmful to working people, especially people of colour.
The threat from the far right will remain high - and probably get more intense. They will not stop until they are stopped. That requires a massive law enforcement effort (including rooting out the problems within police forces.) The threat is significant, and well-armed.
Those who assaulted Congress are the most visible sign of the problem, the problem is rooted in mis- and disinformation enabled by social media firms and promoted by traditional media outlets. We can't win this fight without tackling both of those sources.
Ultimately, changing people's lives for the better is the route out: Biden's willingness to be bold on Covid, the recovery, and on changing people's lives for the better (infrastructure/jobs, min. wage, immigration reform, criminal justice reform) are what really matters.
On the morning of the assault on Congress, organisers in Georgia got the first African-American and Jewish-American senators from that state elected. We can celebrate Biden in the White House, but it is the organisers who made it happen and with whom hope ultimately lies.
