The desk has been used by every president since Rutherford B. Hayes, except Presidents Johnson, Nixon, and Ford, 1964-1977. #InaugurationDay
Queen Victoria gifted this desk to Hayes in 1880 as a way of thanking him for rescuing and returning the Resolute after it was abandoned in 1854 during a search for Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin. #InaugurationDay
