Important green policy news from yesterday as government finalises Future Homes Standard. https://www.businessgreen.com/news/4026016/uk-housebuilders-zero-carbon-ready-standard-2025
It's a classic curate's egg, messy compromise decision. On the one hand it means a massive improvement in green building standards from 2025 and the beginning of the end for gas boilers.
On the other hand, wise heads, including many within the industry insist it could and should have come in from 2023 and the usual suspects were scaremongering when they said they couldn't work to that timetable.
The interim standards are welcome, but it means thousands of new homes are going to be built to lower standards and with gas boilers that are going to have to be replaced with heat pumps down the line.
Ball now very much in the court of councils who have been given the freedom to introduce more ambitious local standards to a degree. Will those councils that have declared climate emergencies now do so asap? https://www.businessgreen.com/news/4026016/uk-housebuilders-zero-carbon-ready-standard-2025
