Since my child was born, we have fought for services every step of the way. Just like thousands of other parents, we were landed into the "system" and boy has it been an eye opener. The endless waiting lists for assessment and diagnosis. The delight in (falsely) believing that
2. once diagnosed, apppropriate interventions, therapies and equipment will be provided in a timely manner by the qualifies professionals. The frustration then when you realise that no such services will be provided. Then comes the fight mode.... and that changes a person.
3. Why is there never public outrage when parents have to fundraise for basic equipment, for appropriate seating, for wheelchairs, for adapted space in their houses? Then there is the fight for school support. The hoops we jump through to access sna support (not schools fault),
4. the fight to keep that support year to year. I have had nothing but positive experiences of how school staff have supported us. They too have taken on our fights and appeals. They share our pain and our joys.
5. I work as a teacher at 2nd level and many students in my care have a wide variety of additional needs which we are more than happy to cater for. We love to see our students thrive and be happy. We also beg for appropriate services, supports and interventions for our students
6. and when they don't materialise from the relevant professionals, we try and plug that gap whether we are qualified or not. And we carry the worries of the families.
We share their frustrations and do all in our power to right the wrongs and pick up the pieces.
We share their frustrations and do all in our power to right the wrongs and pick up the pieces.
7, Services are non existent and successive governments have failed to intervene. They are happy to let families and plough their own furrows, mentally, physically and financially. They are happy to let charities fill the gaps. They are happy for parents to leave the public
8. services and seek out private assessments, therapies and equipment privately. They are happy for families to fundraise for life changing surgeries and travel abroad for same. We have saved them a fortune.
9. So please seeing as there is such outrage at the moment over children with additional needs, direct this anger in the right direction,And don't forget your outrage just because these children will be soon back in schools, the only place that truly cares for them.
