I have a worry that the amazing and to-be-celebrated award to Oxford yesterday on AMR means everyone will now think there is no need to fund AMR anymore it’s all in hand. This will be a disastrous move. 1/n
If Covid teaches us anything it’s that infectious diseases need combatting in a multitude of fronts if you are to control and contain them. 2/n
Combatting AMR will require societal and policy changes of some magnitude. Contacting AMR is providing clean water and sanitation to LMICs. 3/n
Combatting AMR is providing childhood vaccines to LMICs to replace unregulated antimicrobial use. Combatting AMR can’t be done in a way to prevent impact only on developed countries 4/n
Combatting AMR is repurposing treatments in controlled trials. It is developing new narrow spectrum and broad spectrum antimicrobials in a risk free setting 5/b
Combatting AMR is understanding evolution, emergence, transmission and persistence of MDR clones 6/n
That’s my rant/plea done. We need to make AMR the new new Covid level threat and deal with it properly.
