my own personal character analysis on eren
eren values freedom. we see this in the beginning of the show when he speaks about how he’s trapped in a cage and is a reoccurring theme throughout the entire show/manga. but i’ll talk more abt this later.
his character is slowly deteriorating. from the beginning of the show we can see eren not having many friends but becoming ridiculously close to the ones he has.
he values his friendships a ridiculous amount. but him as a person has had very little regard for the lives outside of his friend group. when he fought with annie in the first season there were hundreds of casualties and these didn’t seem to weigh heavy on eren.
he contradicts himself though when he feels remorse for all the scouts who have died for him. but i think that’s because he sees them with the same intentions of him someone who fights for freedom and places them on a higher pedestal.
once eren finally learns what’s beyond the walls i believe this is where we finally begin to see him crack. all of these bits and pieces we’ve seen abt eren’s psyche finally start to make sense. he believes that only those who will “fight” can survive. like when he saved mikasa.
i think he believed all of his friends were this type of person. some one who wouldn’t let the enemy get the best of them and one who would prevail though whatever was thrown at them. armin, mikasa, jean, connie and sasha are the only ones who haven’t left him since the beginning
you could add hange and levi to this list as well i feel like
and then we learn more about how he has infiltrated enemy soil and has a plot against the rest of the world. he wants freedom but sees the world will not be able to forgive the “island devils” who coincidentally consist of his friends.
as i stated earlier, i don’t think he cares about everyone inside the walls, just the people he’s close to. this is what i feel propels him down this path of destruction. all to save the ppl he cares about. doesn’t matter if he has to burn the whole world along the way
as long as his friends are okay and the plan is still in motion.
but that’s not what happens. eren trusts his friends enough to not die. they’ve gotten this far and he trusts them in combat. he relies on their strength in order to declare war and finally start what he thinks will save his friends. and for a second he had that.
he believes they’re all safe and that everyone managed to make it out together. then when he learns that sasha dies and all of his efforts had resulted in one of the most important ppl to him dying, that’s when he snaps. hence him laughing
his friends after that blamed him for the death of sasha because they knew there were other ways to go about this. and when they learn of eren’s plans to start the rumbling, they decide to fight against him.
sasha’s death was a domino effect that lead eren where he is right now. no regard for his friends lives because what’s the point. sasha is dead and his other friends are fighting against him.
he sees this as a form of betrayal and it is resulted in him disregarding the pleas of his friends to stop this. they all believed it was because of them that he did this, which i believe was the case at some point, but his motives have changed when dealing with “betrayal”
when reiner and bert betrayed him, we saw a side of eren we never had before. betrayal by those closest to him results in a rage inside eren that surmounts the anger he feels and i believe he’s feeling the same way all over again. blinded by his goal and hurt by the ppl he loves.
back to the topic of freedom this is why we see him tell the others to do what they want. he’s giving them free range to make their own decisions but he’s not going to put their lives into consideration. they chose their side (one which fundamentally differs from his)
and he believes they will face the consequences.
i don’t think eren grasps how his idea of freedom conflicts to the actual term. he’s turned from freedom and sees himself on a god like level. he makes the decisions and if anyone disagrees they’re in the way and collateral damage.
this is just how i interpreted his character 😬 u don’t have to agree
but let me know if u agree or disagree just be respectful pls
