Hydrological study undertaken in 2011 shows how groundwater is threatened by drilling in Kavango East and West in Namibia. Although #ReconAfrica & #RBS claim no #fracking will take place, long-term exploitation is only viable if the company fracks. /1 https://www.we.com.na/news/groundwater-threatened-by-drilling2021-01-19/
According to the study, the Kavango region consists of layers of unconsolidated deposits that house a porous aquifer - an aquifer comprising loose or solid rock which holds groundwater. Because of its permeable layers, it is relatively easy to drill for water /2
But there is DANGER of water pollution, especially as all of the water in the basin is interconnected. Meanwhile, the company Risk-Based Solutions has scheduled three public meetings, as ReconAfrica intends to submit an application for an environmental impact certificate. /3
RBS is led by Dr Sindila Mwiya, who in his capacity as project advisor to ReconAfrica, assured farmers at the end of 2020 that “only two wells would be drilled as part of an exploration obligation”. /4
Coincidentally, Dr Sindila Mwiya is one of the experts who previously had spoken out in favour of the conservation of groundwater in the hydro study. /5
