Anime That I Believe WLW Would Enjoy!! a thread

i'm titling it this way bc some of these are more heavy undertones, but i know they have a large wlw following so they're definitely worth mentioning!

note: images on that first tweet are from the chinese manhua, Tamen de Gushi (or Their Story) and japanese manga Ouji-sama Nante Iranai

both are amazing works with no animated medium currently, but i highly suggest indulging in them, as they're some of my favorites!

1. Bloom Into You (Yagate Kimi ni Naru)

canon. CANON. A very smart show that tackles very relatable issues about how everyone perceives love. Also read the manga, Yuu and Touko's story doesn't end with the anime.

2. Asagao to Kase-san

CANON. Literally just soft gfs being soft, it’s beautiful, it makes your heart feel warm (also I highly suggest the manga too)

3. Hibike Euphonium

heavy undertones, band gays, visually stunning and gorgeously animated, with one of the genuinely most relatable main characters i've ever seen in anime. also, Reina is too beautiful.

4. Liz and the Blue Bird

more band gays, basically canon, a spin-off of Hibike; I am SO glad they delved more into Mizore and Nozomi's story, the two of them got some time in the spotlight during Hibike S2, but this sendoff was much welcomed.

5. Little Witch Academia

undertones, the staff ship Diakko, you ship Diakko, we all ship Diakko. legit one of the most fun i've ever had watching an anime! i can confidently say LWA is my fav anime ever lol

6. Adachi to Shimamura

canon, SLOWBURN. they're just not together Yet. pls give this one a watch! it's brilliantly animated and incredibly relatable, one of my fav romance anime from 2020

7. Izetta: The Last Witch

basically canon!!!! Like actually. Also it’s about a princess and a witch who rides around on an anti-tank rifle, it’s actually amazing. Not enough people know about this one, even with its out-of-this-world premise, and that's a SHAME.

8. Flip Flappers

basically canon, magical girls, idk how else to describe this other than a wild, trippy ride but it's wonderful; a zany, colorful love story

9. Otherside Picnic

canon yuri, horror, girls bonding over escaping near-death scenarios, this one's currently airing and it looks AMAZING. veryyyy gripping

10, 11, 12, 13. Love Live, Starlight Revue, Bang Dream, and D4DJ

all of these series have UNDERTONES GALORE, a shipping free for all, Bushiroad, bless your soul

14. Lapis Re:LiGHTs

the same premise as all the Bushiroad franchises above, if you loved those, you’ll loveeee Lapis Re:Lights. It’s idols set in a fantasy setting with magic interwoven into the performances, and also Yuri Undertones Galore

15. Assault Lily: Bouquet

basically canon. It has “yuri” in the title, the main characters names are Yuyu and Riri, they acknowledge their shipname as Yuri, they virtually adopt a daughter that they also name Yuri, you see where i’m going with this

16. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

heavy undertones, we all know this one LOL girls save the world by going through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows for each other.

17. Simoun

canon yuri, tackles heavy themes, takes place on a planet where everyone is born female, and then the residents get to choose their permanent sex. It’s very fascinating, 100% recommend.

18. Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll

canonical attraction between the new female lead and Violet. Seriously, what a beautiful film, you don’t need the show to watch the movie (altho i highly recommend the show as well, it’s stunning)

19. Koisuru Asteroid

basically canon, SOFT. space nerd gays want to find an asteroid together. did i mention SOFT????

20. Revolutionary Girl Utena

canon, a brilliant masterpiece of an anime, but does cover some potentially triggering themes, so go in with that in mind

21. Sakura Trick

canon, soft girlfriends do soft girlfriend things while in school

22. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

basically canon, a dragon lady shows up one day and becomes this office lady’s maid, adorable shenanigans happen when they accidentally adopt a smol dragon girl and become a family

23. Oshi Ga Budoukan Ittekuretara Shinu

canon, shows the relationship between fans and idols, very cute (also a fuckin brilliant side ship in Maki and Yumeri)

24. My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom

Katarina’s harem is comprised of both men and women lmfao she’s just too dumb to realize any of them like her. iirc the most popular ship from r/anime was Katarina x Maria

25. Black Rock Shooter

undertonessss!!! you’ve got that cool vocaloid song as the OP, a lovely cast of all female characters, and some of the coolest action shots ever as these girls strive to help each other grow

26. Carole and Tuesday

undertones! A singing duo, very wholesome, also overall just a show with A Lot of heart

27. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

like, the entire series. Fate and Nanoha are basically canon. They have a daughter named Vivio who calls them both mama. They’re basically canon.

28. BNA: Brand New Animal

it’s by Studio Trigger, the same studio that did Little Witch Academia. A very fun series, with a cute tanuki girl who later gets joined by her kitsune friend. Great action too, i personally loved it

29. Maria-sama ga Miteru

Old but gold!!! You can credit a lot of modern yuri tropes to this one lol it’s worth going back to your routes and watching, I Promise

30. Fragtime

I haven’t actually watched this one yet, but I’ve heard lots of ppl praise it so I figured it was worth mentioning! bc if you can’t take my word for it, you take everyone else’s lol And if you can’t take that, pls look at these visuals, they look adorable

31. Vlad Love

canon, I believe? There’s only one episode out so far, but it looks very, very promising with its comedic premise of a human girl falling for a vampire girl (also it’s by the same person who directed Ghost in the Shell apparently)

Cleaning up the end of this thread! I initially had mentioned another show that is uh, very questionable (i do Not like it personally lol but i have seen ppl with other opinions) but i’d figured it was worth mentioning. After negative responses, it’s been removed

Anyway, I’ll be adding more suggestions if anyone has any! I’m always looking for more recs as well lol

32. Symphogear

I was just rec’d this one! The fact that it has 2 canonical couples is hype af, I’m definitely going to watch

33. Princess Principal

I can’t believe I forgot this one earlier. They’re spies, they’re classy af, this show i remember got pretty dark but it was Amazing the entire time

34. Kakegurui

HOW DID I FORGET THIS BANGER???? This entire anime was a trip, the girls were the standout of the show, I actually forgot there was any other protagonist

Yumeko, Mary, Kirari, and Sayaka are all so iconic

35. Wandering With: The Journey of Elaina

Considering how I Just finished this one, idk how I forgot it lol brilliant anime aside with the way it fluctuates in tone so dramatically, Saya is also just deadass in love with Elaina and I love them, they're such dorks

Special mention to Ymir and Historia from Attack on Titan!

iirc they're canon? I was debating mentioning AoT but it's more of a shounen show with a wlw couple in it than a show you'd watch solely for yuri

Nevertheless, this couple is iconic

36. Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online

I say this completely unironically— I loved this fucking show, it's just that no one watched it bc it's got SAO attached to it

The females are the stars in GGO, and lovely yuri undertones too. Pls watch, you won't regret it.

37. Akuma no Riddle

Another one I can't believe I forgot it's been too long since I last watched Akuma no Riddle lol iirc they're more canon in the manga, but canon nonetheless
