In my freshman year of college, I was expected to read and understand passages like this and they were infuriating to me ; I had. I idea what the author was talking about.

2/ But now, after everything I’ve learned and read, text like this is so satisfying and interesting because it draws on all that accumulated knowledge to reveal deeper truths and understanding of the knowledge I’ve accumulated.
3/ I think you could do a Ken Burns style 15 hour documentary on American history (including “foreign relations”) using this thread as a structure. There’s so, so much to learn about undergirding every sentence of this thread.
4/ Being able to understand ideas and arguments like this is so far my favorite thing about getting old.

When I was a kid this stuff infuriated me. I thought it was all deliberately obtuse bullshit.
5/ But if the author told you everything you needed to know to really understand it you’d need a whole book just to summarize!
6/ I don’t mean to detract from what the Professor is actually saying here; I think it’s a desperately important thread. I just found myself being able to read and understand it and remembered a time when I wouldn’t have been able to.
