I’m reading this book right now & am being challenged & stretched...even as someone who is for de-criminalization of drugs. I appreciate @drcarlhart for his work & candor. As a mental health advocate, I recognize we’ve focused on “treatment not punishment” in recent years... https://twitter.com/PRHAudio/status/1349129054952120320
But here’s the thing - a lot of drug users don’t need “treatment”. So many drug users are enjoying the benefits of drug use (whether currently legal or not) and are meeting the responsibilities of their families, work, community work etc
Yes, we need resources for people experiencing addiction, but we also need to be honest about the data around drug use, which points to the fact that most people using drugs experience little to no negative side-effects & the negativity is associated with ignorance & prohibition
Also, I’m sorta nerding out that the Symposium I organize made it into this book. I’m so humbled & honored that we were able to bring @drcarlhart to OK to speak to mental health practitioners & advocates & rethink our understanding of drug use.
