Dream and Techno are extremely skilled and feared people in the DSMP, who have been constantly betrayed over and over again. The main difference between the two of them is that Techno has Phil while Dream has no one.
this makes me extremely sad
Even Punz, the guy he told all his plans to, despite being a close business partner, seems to be swayed by Tommy. His best friends believe he doesn’t care about them. How long ‘til Awesamdude bails on him too? Puts him in the prison they built together?
Disclaimer: This does not excuse Dream's actions. He still did and said some pretty incorrigible things. He definitely had some of these betrayals coming. However, it doesn't make it any less sad that he's been left alone time and time again, getting more distant.
This just makes it harder for him to ever come back from this. Without anyone ever having his back, he's quickly approaching, if not PASSED, the event horizon of this character arc. I think he already sees himself as having no return given his plan to turn everyone against him.
He seemed to start off pretty alright. I don't blame him for trying to stop L'manburg since it was found to create demand for drugs, which were made from stolen and scammed materials. Perhaps he went about it the wrong way, but, initially, the intention was in the right place. +
At the election, it seemed to make sense that he wouldn't back Wilbur given 1. he went to war with him and Tommy, not too long ago, really, and 2. those two literally tried to create a rigged election, so big No either way.
Then he switched to Pogtopia's side, which initially made me confused, but it made sense after a bit considering how Schlatt started out his presidency, tearing things down with gusto and upsetting the original citizens, then further sinking into a rather corrupt leader.
He couldn't intervene himself as he was supposed to be natural and Schlatt was democratically elected. It made sense that he'd turn to the Wil +Tommy, whose previous rule was relatively peaceful, if unproductive. They had probable cause to oust Schlatt and were a kinda safe bet.
Despite the help he offers Pogtopia though, he's still kind of villainized, especially by Tommy (understandably so, honestly). Wilbur turns to him for help when he's spiraled because he thinks they're the "Bad Guys", and I feel Dream's been called such so long he plays along.
He advocates for chaos but really, I think he initially just wanted L'Manburg/Manburg gone. It was a blight upon the SMP, the catalyst which slowly pushed the server more and more out of his control and out of order - so he wants it gone, and Wilbur and Tommy see him as villain.
He just keeps leaning into it more and more, since he's already tried to resolve things from the shadows without much pomp and circumstance, but that and peace doesn't seem to work well here, so he goes along. Plays villain, enables Wilbur, leans HARD into his role.
Figures he needs to get rid of Schlatt too, so he joins his side, probably knowing what the Pogtopia army can do, just ensuring the war would be necessary. He backs Techno up when he turns to destroy L'Manburg because, as it will again in the future, their objectives align.
Yes, he probably used the burning of George's house to his advantage so he can put L'Manburg under pressure. But, he didn't exactly hurt George by pushing it, and it allowed him to go after the country, 2-in-1 deal. Besides, he was already seen as a villain, why not lean in MORE?
He puts George up as the King as Eret had clearly sided with L'manburg, directly opposed to his goal of eradicating that country. Then he realizes his mistake of putting him as the King, endangering him, and burns his bridges with Sapnap and Goerge unintentionally by ousting him.
Conjecture time: I think that's what kinda made him Snap and go full "Fuck It" mode. He didn't mean it when he said he didn't care about anything except the discs before, it was just a play to start tearing L'Manburg apart with the strongest but easily riled up member: Tommy, but
now it's kind of personal, perhaps blaming his problems fully not just on L'Manburg but the only living founder of L'Manburg: Tommy. Pushes Tommy away from Tubbo and has him exiled to get a taste of what he's experiencing. Alone, blamed for everything.
Gonna end it there, at least for now. I'm kinda out of steam. I have more thoughts, but am having trouble putting them down. If anyone wants to have discussions, I think that'd be fun.
Don't call me a Dream Apologist (derogatory), I still think he deserves whatever Big Storm's coming for him. I think, afaik, everyone's reasons for leaving him are valid, given their influences and the situations, but I think there's something to sympathize with how he's slipped+
and eventually lost most of the support he's acquired, even his best friends, and there's something I find profoundly sad with that. Imagine being at an all-time low and looking around for the people you trusted and finding no one there.
TL;DR: Please, Mr. Dream, give us some more lore
