3 years ago I lost faith in newsletters.

Newsletters ran riot in my inbox, fuelling stress & guilt.

I’ve since changed how I think about newsletters which re-ignited my love.

Here’s my advice on how to harness the power of newsletters in 2021: https://seanjoshua.medium.com/how-to-read-newsletters-d233315e00cb
1/ Change your mindset

Why do we treat newsletters with the stress-inducing mindset we apply to emails?

Would you feel guilty if you didn’t read every post on your Twitter timeline or every book on your shelf?

Read because you're excited to, not for a sense of completion.
@lennysan suggests:

“Let the content wash over you and move on. Even if you find one nugget of valuable content a month, you’re winning.”

You don’t have to read every link. There’s no test at the end.

Treat your newsletters like you would a magazine.
2/ Change your environment

If you read newsletters in your inbox, make sure you separate them from other emails to maintain order.

The best way is to set up a filter for newsletters to skip the inbox into a dedicated folder.
This works for some but I struggled.

I can’t enjoy reading where my brain is hardwired to work.

This is why newsletter readers exist:

“They are perfect for distraction-free reading and remove the strain on the inbox“ @NicWondering

Try Stoop, Meco (i’m biased) or Mailbrew
3/ Change your habits

We sometimes get carried away with our newsletter subscriptions.

This = inbox chaos.

Only add newsletters that excite you. Cull any that don’t.

“If the only newsletters you get are the ones you truly find valuable, you won't feel overwhelmed.” @jspector
Next make your reading time intentional by scheduling.

"Pick a regular time each day to read newsletters so - like social media - you don't get caught in an endless passive scroll." @GrantGurewitz

You dictate when to read, not notifications.
Lastly remember you don’t need to read everything then and there.

@JanelSGM recommends:

“Save links directly to an app (Notion or Pocket). Set aside small chunks of time to review interesting articles later.”
4/ Final thoughts

It’s so important for us (the reader) to know how to thrive on the incredible content available.

A few tiny changes to how, where and why you read newsletters can unlock the true power of newsletter reading.
Thank you to the newsletter experts who added insights.

Check out their newsletters (if your inbox can handle it):

@lennysan = product & growth
@NicWondering = founder tools
@jspector = creator inspiration
@GrantGurewitz = burnout prevention
@JanelSGM = interesting reads
