Did you know that homeschooling is illegal in Germany? Because it is.

I actually didn't know that was even a thing until I moved to the US. Why is it illegal? Because education needs to be standardized in some way to get everyone on the same page in terms of facts and values.
This matters because the insurrectionists at the Capitol on Jan 6th have a connection to the homeschooling movement and Christian extremism that can't be ignored. https://twitter.com/kristinrawls/status/1351242591380131840
Ironically, the same people who scream about young people getting indoctrinated by others are quite big on the idea of indoctrination when it comes to their own communities. Homeschooling is one of those sources.

That's why it's not legal to do this in Germany nor should it be.
I expected to get a lot of pushback but consider this: Homeschooling in the US specifically is a bandaid solution for a lot of inequality in other systems and I understand why people want to keep it. Banning homeschooling on its own would not work under the current system.
Germany ALSO gives people access to a lot of special needs schools for neurodiverse kids for example. They fund schools better (not enough, but still), they pay teachers. This is a multi-layered system but homeschooling is - in my opinion - a bandaid solution.
