I'm following the confirmation hearings and a couple of points jump out to me. First, Team Biden better on messaging. Second, on foreign policy saying mostly the right things, some concerns but let's move on, AND complementing the Trump administration in most areas 1/n
Notably where they disagree is on strategy or implementation but acknowledge Trump administration got the threat analysis right. I emphasize this because a) this is part of saying the right thing and b) everyone of you who blew a gasket every time you saw letter T need to 2/n
Reconsider some of your misplaced irrational anger. Third, the key issue for the Biden administration is if they generally agree with Trump about the threats, how they are going to execute a plan to take tangible steps to counter those threats. Everything so far, 3/n
Whether in the campaign Foreign Affairs articles or the even in these confirmation hearings has been incredibly vague about how exactly they plan to work forward under the premise that Trump administration got the threats right but the solutions or execution wrong. 4/n
There is literally almost no information about tangible steps or policies. The reason I mention this, as I have mentioned previously, is that the Biden administration has made so many vague promises and cliches on foreign policy they are contradictory divorced from reality 5/n
You can want to work with Europe on China but Europe clearly wants to work with China to sell more Volkswagen and Xinjiang isn't a problem. If you want to get allies in South East Asia, you need to be prepared to spend money. You ready to tell progressives we are spending 6/n
Money in SE Asia but not increasing a domestic spending program as rapidly as you would like? Because journos never actually asked questions and just churned their PR, we have no idea what actual steps or policies they plan to implement. Once you have to take steps 7/n
To implement policies that raise the cost to China, and by the transitive property, the US to some degree, you are going to start making some people mad. Domestic constituents or allies. I would like more detail about specific but until they start doing stuff....we all wait.
