⚠️ FILM BREAKDOWN THREAD⚠️

Today I’m taking a look at the Buccaneers Run Defense and what went wrong back in Week 6!

10 tweets, 4 minutes of your time, that’s all I’m asking. ⬇️⬇️
What you DON’T DO:
Don’t run outside the tackles! Matt LaFleur knows ALL about this. Each of these 4 runs came from the 1st half in Week 6.

Tampa Bay have the fastest LB duo in the NFL. You’re asking too much of your O-Line to move laterally and beat White and David to the edge.
What TO DO:
Run right at them and KEEP using motion.

This 25-yard run by Jamal Williams is the perfect example of both of these points.

Firstly, the motion eliminates White from the play. He jumps to the outside giving Bahk the angle and the leverage. He’s neutralised.
Secondly, how many steps does David take before Linsley engages him with the block? Barely any.

They take away David’s biggest advantage: Speed.

Linsley doesn’t need to ‘beat’ him to a spot. The only way Lavonte David is making a play is by running right through Linsley.
Of Green Bay’s 19 rushing attempts vs Tampa Bay, 10 of them were outside the tackles, for a combined 17 yards (1.7 yards per carry).

Meanwhile they amassed 63 yards on their other 9 carries. (7 yards per carry!)
If you split the Bucs season in half, in their first nine games of the season, Tampa Bay had only two games where they allowed over 4 yards per carry.

Since then, they’ve allowed over 4 yards per carry in seven of their last nine games! Including five games with over 5 ypc.
So this Run Defense isn’t what it once was right?

Enter Vita Vea.

The 350lb DT has been activated off IR to play on Sunday. Vea has been sidelined since Week 5 with a broken ankle. And in those first 5 games, he wreaked havoc.
Just like he did vs Aaron Donald, LaFleur will test Vea’s health early with some inside runs.

3 of the Packers first 4 plays vs LAR were runs right up the gut.

Look at the first play of the game. Linsley and Jenkins knock down Donald right from the jump.

“Welcome to Lambeau.”
Why does the running game matter on Sunday?

This graph shows the pressures Green Bay have given up each week. Maybe it was just an anomaly, but the Matt LaFleur has every right to want to keep the ball on the ground more on Sunday.
Todd Bowles called a very blitz-heavy gameplan which coincided with A-Rod having his worst game of the season.

Rodgers hasn’t been sacked vs the blitz since.

I can’t think of any reason for Tampa Bay to severely alter that gameplan heading into Sunday. Green Bay must cope.
Just to add one more point on Vea and the Pass Rush.

It’s rare for the Rams to line up with a 1-tech rusher right over the center (where Vea lines up).

On this play, they do, Gaines beats Linsley, but Jones is there to save a hurry. Expect this on Sunday.
Props to @jacksonkrueger for raising that last point, and making it very easy to find some of these clips.
