While most of the blame for Trumpism and the Capitol attack has fallen largely on Twitter, Facebook and social media, the VASTLY more culpable Fox News has escaped relatively unscathed. .. 1
Since the election, the 30-40% of Americans who get all their information from Fox- yes, a “mainstream media “organisation- have been told over and over that election fraud was rife, that Biden cheated and Trump actually won. (2)
Sure, the “serious news” segments conveyed the truth but the constant refrain of the many commentators was that We The People were robbed, denied justice and yet again made the victims of the evil, lying liberal elite.
When the Capitol attack happened, Fox focussed more on the outrage (“five alarm fire”, according to a Fox & Friends presenter) of Trump’s Twitter account being cancelled than the actual event.
Whataboutism over the BLM protests (covered by Fox entirely as only violence and property damage) reigned supreme. Was there any soul searching at the network over their role in the breakdown of US democracy? Of course not
Instead they’ve replaced a serious news show with more rightwing opinion to stop the bleed to Newsmax & OANN. There are no consequences for the lies &misrepresentation &there’s no doubt they’ll use this momentum to undermine the Biden presidency & the entire US political system.
