As soon as officials step on the floor each night, to monitor pre-game warmups, we start gathering as much info as we can, that will help us do our job better that night.
Part of that is ID’ing player tendencies.

While your team’s practicing catch & shoot situations in warmups, my crew & I are practicing ID’ing players pivot foot on catch. If we see a player tends to Travel by walking into shot after catch, we’ll be on high alert when that player is in catch/shoot situations in game

During your teams layup lines, we’re ID’ing “end of dribble” & pivot foot. Same thing when you’re practicing finishing moves off the dribble such as step backs, jump stops, spin moves, etc.
If a player has a tendency to end dribble to early, we’ll be ready for it in game.

During pre-game defensive drills, we are watching to see who plays “hands on” defense, and has tendency to use hands to impede dribblers freedom of movement, re-rout dribblers w/ forearms, etc.

During competitive post play drills, we’re looking to see if your bigs post up legally, with elbows bent, or if they post up using illegal straight arms to ward of the defender on their back.
Same with box out drills.

Point is, officials can learn A LOT about players & their tendencies, just from observing a 15-20 minute pre-game warm up. If there’s any truth to “how you practice is how you play”, then ask yourself, “what are my players telling the refs w/ their pre-game warm up?”

This isn’t a “Don’t give officials a scouting report” thread.
It’s a “Teach your players the rules of the game, require ‘legal’ practice reps, and help your players use rules to their advantage” thread.
Hope it helps someone.
