“Currently, women who have escaped the sex trade and have convictions for street soliciting will have to live with this record for ever.” @bindelj on a vital legal case to end one of the many injustices faced by women who survive the sex industry. https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/it-s-time-to-end-the-criminal-record-trap-for-sex-trade-survivors
It is worth noting that two of the most important feminist commentaries published in Britain today appeared in the @spectator (Julie’s piece
) and the @Telegraph ( @suzanne_moore’s piece that, as @Sian_L_S put it, differentiated between kindness and middle-class respectability).

These are both commentary pieces that would once have been at home in the @guardian. Both pieces are about women’s rights. Both written by feminists. In fact, both @suzanne_moore & @bindelj used to write for them. And the Guardian is depleted by the lack of those feminist voices.
It’s shameful that traditionally right-wing outlets have more space for this urgently needed feminist analysis than the @guardian. And it’s even more shameful that so many people on the left allowed this to happen without putting up a fight.
I am but one dissenting voice with limited institutional power. Realistically this thread isn’t going to change much. But as a young feminist I feel an immense debt of gratitude to @bindelj & @suzanne_moore. And I won’t turn my back on them for the sake of personal gain.
