Unpopular opinion: the emphasis on automation, Fully Automated Luxury Communism, and work-time reductions / work sharing in degrowth/steady state economics is causing confusion at a time when there is a HUGE amount of work to be done to create low & better carbon societies.
Low carbon & better societies are not just slowed down or scaled down versions of our current one. They involve HUGE investments in housing retrofit, dismantling and transforming fossil infrastructures, ramping up renewables, public services etc. The amount of work is phenomenal.
Mind, we might be able to rest on our laurels in a few decades if/when we "succeed". But since we've kicked the planet into a state of crisis, whether it's a full blown apocalyptic cataclysm or something more manageable, I think we'll have a huge amount of work in repair ...
adaptation, resilience etc. Or simply in rewilding and restoring ecosystems, undoing past damage. I mean plastic clean-up should keep our kids and grandkids in employment for their whole lives, no? Anyhoo. Just my 2c.
