Arrived in Texas: August 2
Start of term: August 24
First pay check: October 1
Pay amount: $1,247.08
For two months, I lived off the savings I was fortunate enough to accrue from paid(!!!) RA jobs. That's $4500 down the drain BEFORE I got paid.

These costs are underestimates for a variety of reasons, not least because I didn't keep all of the receipts. I was "lucky" to have not sunk more money on flights because I didn't get as many interviews; I can only imagine how expensive the interview process can get.
Point being: this is A LOT of money. How does this discipline expect to recruit diverse candidates who would work with underserved populations when people have to front $8500+ before they see their stipend as a grad student? Sure hope they're getting paid as RAs. Pay your RAs!
Don't get me started on course credit for working as an RA. If the university isn't offering a flat fee for part-time versus full-time students, then they might be paying the university $800+ in tuition for the privilege of working in your lab.
Final notes:
• Application costs were across two cycles: 26 applications, 3 GRE General Tests, 1 GRE Subject Test, 2 in-person interviews
• For one of the interviews, I received partial reimbursement for travel costs (much appreciated)

Cost of watching transcripts get lost because the way my community colleges combined their records was confusing: 5 years of my life expectancy
Cost of discovering post hoc that I was traveling when COVID-19 was already in the U.S.: priceless
