#COVID thoughts

In the "west" we're really worried about the current UK strain and fear any new mutation. Our newspapers write tons of articles about mutations no matter how insignificant. Epidemiologists have written countless tweets about dangers + likelihood of happening ...
We've discused how certain vaccine rollout strategies are more likely than others to "select" for mutations, etc (not to hate on Carl below👇), BUT NOBODY is talking about how unequal access to vaccines is the biggest thing we should worry about! https://twitter.com/CT_Bergstrom/status/1351061920426680326?s=20
Why you ask? 🤔

Well, think of what are the best biological conditions for selecting new #COVID mutations

That's right, large unvaccinated and connected populations

The more susceptible people there are, the larger the pool of possible mutations/strains
Put differently, if we only vaccinate part of the world (the most wealthy part) we run a huge "biological" risk of new strains appearing which could circumvent our current mRNA vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna)
In the backdrop of this, @WHO just reported that while 39 million people have been vaccinated in rich countries just 25 people have been vaccinated in a poor country. That's right not 25 million or 25 thosand, just 25!!!! https://twitter.com/WHO/status/1351107170817990656?s=19
If we keep up with the unequal access to the vaccine, and if we keep neglecting the #COVAX initiative we'll soon be engaged in an biological adversarial battle with COVID - which has a near unlimited reservoir for mutations available
Have we not learned anything from the past 12 months? #COVID is not a "thing" we can solve on a national level!

We need global initiatives! We're all in this boat together. Not solving #COVID in a poor place means we haven't solved COVID at home either
