Alberta #UCP is still proceeding with massively destructive coal mining agenda.

Anybody declaring victory because of today’s announcement of a freeze in new coal leasing and rollback of the December leases is falling for a diversionary tactic. Don’t do that. 1/6

Today’s panic decision by the government leaves all of the new leases from earlier in 2020 in place and it leaves all formerly-protected Category 2 lands open for strip mines. Cabin Ridge and much of the rest of the Oldman headwater, and the Ram River canyon area, remain at risk
Our water remains at risk.
Nothing short of fully restoring the Coal Development Policy’s prohibition of open pit (strip) mines in Category 2 will head off the train wreck the Kenney government set in motion last June. 3/6

Please share this post so that others won’t fall for this attempt to make it look like a victory for Alberta when it changes almost nothing at all. They are treating us like a political problem and trying to solve that - not addressing the real problem they have created. 4/6
And believe me, I’ve been looking for an excuse finally to Pat this government on the back. They just seem determined not to make that possible. 5/6
Our mountains and streams are under exactly the same threat now as they have been ever since the Kenney UCP arbitrarily cancelled the Coal Policy last June. Our work, sadly, is not yet done. No strip mines in our headwaters. Period. 6/6
