I have had an opportunity to listen to the excellent Victor Pickard ( @VWPickard) speaking about Democracy and Journalism. Sharing some highlights on these topics below. (1/8)
(2/8) Advertising-reliant model of the media business is irreparably broken. The exchange between advertisers and publishers where news is only a byproduct doesn't work anymore. Nowadays, this same business model applies to @Facebook and @Google.
(3/8) Movement for breaking up monopolies such as Facebook and Google is a positive phenomenon: "But we are facing not only monopoly problem, but capitalism problem." - @VWPickard
(4/8) In the US context, the amount of money spent on public media per year on a capita basis equals the price of a cappuccino.

(5/8) We are facing local journalism crisis. Many local newspapers switched to an online-only model, but we know that once the newspaper goes online, it can't provide good content anymore.
(6/8) "Pandemic is not a cause but an accelerator of modern journalism problems."
(7/8) One of the potential solutions for journalism is crowd-sourcing. However, it works only to some degree, it is not a systemic fix.
