In light of recent #FilmTwitter revelations, I wanted to talk about a worrying pattern I've noticed and why it's time to recognise being petty and elitist over opinions regarding movies, cartoons, etc. not just as overly dickish, but as a dead serious red flag.
While I didn't know of Haydn, John and Joseph's actions until recently, at their worst, in hindsight, there was an undercurrent of elitism and snobbery to the way they talked about film, some have mentioned being unfollowed by Haydn for talking about the MCU.
Now obviously some people can be just plain petty snobs, but the pattern of them being creeps as well comes up with alarming frequency; Harry Knowles, John K., Max Landis, Arielrocks5, that's just the ones I know about or remember off the top of my head.
Outside of sexual harassment, you got the Channel Awesome drama, Mr. Enter doxxing a Spongebob Squarepants writer, Mr. Anime murdering his family; again, they're the ones I either know about or remember off the top of my head.
I realise that, while sexual harassment is obviously more extreme than elitism, they both come from a similar moral base, the inability to acknowledge and empathise with people's individuality and agency.
My overall point is that I think it's time we stopped normalising disrespect for others' opinions and tastes and not be afraid to call it out; I admit I'm as guilty of staying out of it as the next guy, but even if it doesn't lead to harassment, it shouldn't be welcome anymore.
To finish, if you first thought on this thread is to assume I'm talking about your opinions of film and media, you might want to look into why you feel that.
