A lot of people like to say that Sasuke is useless & a punching bag for Isshiki. Failing to see how much impact he has in the battle because they're too angry to look properly.
Before the battle began, we are shown his resolve. His willingness to die for the -
- village at any moment. This communicates how far he's come as a character & how much resolve he has. I don't think I need to explain why this is important. It's a little piece of dialogue that could've easily been omitted, but I appreciate its inclusion.
That line had a lot of impact on Boruto, fostering development for him. Something that I also really liked was the promise he made to Boruto. It communicates & solidifies his mental strength and sense of duty, enriching their dynamic.
Aside from the neat character work. Sasuke, contrary to popular opinion, has some decent agency in the actual fight itself.

Of course Isshiki beat him badly, because he's way out of Sasuke's league. Something the series established prior, but Sasuke's decisions/plans helped -
- them win, even though Naruto's contribution was the most important. At the beginning, Sasuke devised the plan to confuse Isshiki so they could get Boruto to transport him to another dimension. This helped them with two things:
- Avoid casualties.
- Space to go all out.
- Avoid casualties.
- Space to go all out.
He made that plan by utilising Sukuna Hikona's weakness, which he learned from Amado. Then at the end of the fight, when Kawaki was within Isshiki's grasp, he comes in clutch. Not only does he save Kawaki using his Rinnegan, he also left him the mineral dust.
This bought Kawaki more than enough time to escape & think of a plan. Something he wouldn't have had the luxury of doing had this not happened. He was instrumental to Isshiki's defeat.
I think the main reason why people are angered by his portrayal in these past 4 chapters (battle-wise) is because it's a monthly manga. Binging will put things into perspective, as things won't feel dragged out & the aftertaste isn't left to linger for a whole month.
