1. Before you “TAG AN ARTIST” 🛑 STOP. You might be hurting a friend, instead of helping.

See, there’s a new scam that broke artists & celebs (or whoever they’re allowing to use their verified pages) are using to take advantage of aspiring musicians.

A motherf*cking THREAD 🧵
2. Supposedly, this has been going on for more than a year. I just found out recently through a convo I had with Ghost Face Killah (or whoever currently has control over his account). They reach out, feign interest, claim they have a “tape” coming, and offer you a spot for $500
3. And it’s not just GFK. There’s a whole bunch of them now that are either willingly participating in this or being duped by a 3rd party into giving control over their account in exchange for a flat fee (I’m guessing $100K+ and a 50/50 profit share?)
SIDE NOTE: many of these screenshots were gathered from work done by @heyyybonita and rap.ponzischeme (IG). Please check out their work on this subject matter, as they hipped me to much of this.
4. The problem is, these “tapes” either never come out or they’re thrown up on datpiff, soundcloud, and Spotify by a company unaffiliated with the artist. Then, what they do is manipulate the stream count with bots to make it seem as if you’re gaining streams. You’re not...
5. The streams are not real. You are NOT GAINING NEW AUDIENCE. If you examine the playlists, they do get thousands of streams, but they’re hosted by pages like “Playlist.hub” or “MoreStreams” which have around 100 followers. This is a RED FLAG.
6. The artist does not “host” your music. The most they will do is allow their photo be used in the “tape” and post your song on a short IG story if you start pressing them about what’s going on. That’s the emergency button! An IG story post for $500 😂
7. Is it because Covid slowed up the show money/walk thru money? Why are so many artists selling playlists slots for $500 or allowing their verified accounts to be taken over for this purpose? And WHY are they TAKING ADVANTAGE of struggling artists? Despicable.
8. Now it’s no longer just the older rappers trying to get a bag, there are hundreds of Spotify playlist companies and “marketing” companies that are targeting young artists on IG/FB , offering them hundreds of thousands of plays for pennies on the dollar. THE STREAMS ARE FARMED.
9. This racket ... this complete scam needs to stop. Y’all are taking advantage of folks that are desperate to have their music heard.

Putting their music on a phantom playlist that nobody ever hears and using bots to inflate the streams is fucking shady.
