Why do kids with #ADHD have trouble managing emotions? Kids w/ #ADHD more likely to have:
-emotional intensity (stronger emotions)
-emotional impulsivity (quicker emotional reactions)
-emotional lability (more variable emotions)
-irritability (more negative emotions)

Emotional intensity:
Kids w/ #ADHD often have stronger emotions. Stronger emotions are harder to control. Frequent strong emotions also makes it harder to recognize mild emotions - if you are used to being explosively angry, its hard to recognize mild frustration. 2/x
Emotional impulsivity:
Kids w/ #ADHD may emotionally react before they even know why they are upset. Quick emotional reactions make it hard to stop & use coping skills. These impulsive emot. reactions may lead to negative behavior with consequences that leads to more emotion. 3/x
Emotional lability:
Kids w/ #ADHD can be very "up & down" emotionally - w/"high highs" & "low lows."Their emotions are unpredictable-to others & themselves. Harder to cope when you can't predict emotions. 4/x
Irritability:
Kids w/ #ADHD often have more negative emotions. They get more negativity than typical kids. They are in environments that expose their weaknesses (i.e. school) and then often punished for their symptoms. More neg emot makes it harder to cope if things go wrong. 5/x
So what can we do to help kids w/ #ADHD? A few recs:
1) Teach kids w/ #ADHD to recognize & label their emotions
2)Focus on emotions before behavior
3) Teach quick, active coping strategies
4) Empathy - it is hard to be a kid w/ #ADHD, & they really are trying hard to cope.
End
Addendum - this is all true for adults w/ #ADHD too. My focus is on kids w/ #ADHD so I tend to phrase posts about kids b/c of character limits (and b/c there are some changes in #ADHD as kids grow into adults), but #ADHD is a lifelong disorder and most probs persist into adulthood.
