What is financial independence

There are many contradictory definitions.

Old school finance placed $1 million as the benchmark for retiring comfortably. But depending on your lifestyle and retirement goals, you might need significantly more or less substantially less.

Financial independence is reflective of your unique situations - it factors in your hopes and dreams, your current and future lifestyles, your career and retirement goals.

You do not necessarily need to stop working in order to be financially independent. Many of those who have reached this stage continue to work, but are free to choose the work they do.
