During the last days, many Twitter folks tried to analyze the Taliban's use of drones. Often, it was flawed and very problematic, without focusing on crucial points on this matter.
1. Taliban use commercial surveillance drones for a couple of times now. Why? Because the want to imitate American drone warfare. They fall for the propaganda that drones are "precise" and keep spreading this narrative. "We don't kill civilians with drones."
2. Other militant groups also use drones for the very same reasons. That's the result of the world's "dronification" but we should not forget how it started. Many non-state actors from PKK to AQ & Taliban try to copy the warfare of those they are fighting: https://www.newamerica.org/international-security/reports/world-drones/non-state-actors-with-drone-capabilities/
3. Most of the usage is tied to propangada purposes. "Look, we can do that too!" That's the attitude behind it but in fact, the use of such commercial drones doesn't really affect what is happening on the ground. It's also not comparable to the drones state actors are using.
4. Where are the Taliban drones coming from? You can make big conspiracy theories if you don't know much about the issue, or you can observe realistically: Several neighboring countries, especially China, already produce and export drones en masse.
And since we are still talking about commercial drones weaponized by the Taliban themselves, it's not difficult to get them through black markets etc.
5. I think it's astonishing that the recent use of some little Taliban drones somehow still got more attention that all the American Reapers and Predators flying over Afghanistan for almost two decades and made it the most drone bombed country in the world.
6. And yes, you f* cannot compare any commercial UAV technology to the global drone assassination complex of the US ranging from Afghanistan to Nevada to Ramstein and elsewhere.
What I want to say: We wouldn't be where we are today without all this. Now if you want to keep spreading and blowing up the Taliban drone stuff, it's up to you. But that's exactly what they want you to do while also ignoring 99% of the whole story.
