I also wrote about how two former commissioners, who were the only Black and Muslim commissioners at the time, said they were not reappointed because they were “too vocal about race” and because the Equalities Office at the time wanted more commissioners from business backgrounds

At the time of both stories David Isaac was chair. I asked the EHRC then if they had any concerns about its independence. The press office said it was an independent regulator and takes its impartiality very seriously. Now Isaac is calling for a “truly independent EHRC”.
