tbh i’ve worked a few service jobs and met some ppl who really enjoyed what they do. it wasn’t hell for them, except they had no health care and low wages and got treated like shit. THAT was the part that was killing them.
i remember a woman who worked with me at walmart pharmacy. her second job was tim hortons. she had regulars and knew all their orders. she even bought a jar of peanut butter because one late night truck driver loved PB on his bagels in the morning.
she really seemed to enjoy the routine and the chance to interact with regulars and having the ability to organize her workplace and have stuff run a certain way. i always wonder what it would have been like it just one job could hire her full time and pay her a living wage.
i’ve met some AMAZING bartenders who were truly artists. they didn’t have any healthcare or real job security. many of them had painkiller addictions because the job did nothing to provide healthcare or properly onsite health protections. a union could have done that.
anyone else have stories like this? i’ll bet there are millions. a service job doesn’t have to be hell or purgatory or shameful.. pay ppl better, ensure we all have healthcare regardless of employment, and stop expecting ppl to break their bodies for corporations.
