The consultation period for Ireland's Air Pollution Control Programme closes Friday 22 Jan @ 5.30pm
Everyone can give input to this crucial government policy, but what is it, and why is it important?

... the government is obliged by European Law to publish a National Air Pollution Control Programme (NAPCP), to tackle Nitrogen Oxides, Ammonia, and other toxic air pollutants. Air pollution is a massive issue in Ireland, causing >1,000 deaths per year https://www.epa.ie/irelandsenvironment/air/#:~:text=In%20Ireland%2C%20the%20number%20of,single%20biggest%20environmental%20health%20risk' 2/
... #AirPollution is mainly created by 3 factors:
-Nitrogen Oxides from cars
- Ammonia from intensive agriculture
- Particulate matter from burning solid fuels in houses.
The draft NAPCP does not seriously address any of these issues, and we urge you to demand better. /3

... Transport and NOx
Diesel, Petrol and Hybrid cars emit tons of Nitrogen Oxides every year. A fundamental transition to cycling, walking, and subsidised mass transit is the only way to really impact air quality. This is absent from the NAPCP

... Agricultural Ammonia
Fatal air pollution is not just a problem in cities. In rural areas, ammonia is a silent killer of people, animals, and ecosystems. Our Ammonia emissions are way out of line with European limits, and increasing all the time 5/ https://www.antaisce.org/news/ammonia-air-pollution-health-hazard

... "Ammonia is toxic, pungent and suffocating. It causes air pollution and is a greenhouse gas, and in places like Moninea Bog it can wreak havoc. Without urgent action, the impact on Ireland's ecological and public health will be very serious." 6/ https://www.irishtimes.com/news/science/the-trouble-with-ammonia-1.3721098
... The increase in ammonia emissions is directly correlated with relentless increase in the national herd, specifically the dairy sector. Dairy cows are biggest emitter of ammonia, and no. of Irish dairy cows is consistently growing, facilitated by govt policy. 7/

... Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5)
It was recently reported that pollution levels in Dublin hit a 30 year high. This is, in large part, because thousands of homes continue to burn coal, peat and wet wood in fireplaces. We need to ban this practice. /8 https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/bad-air-day-pollution-in-dublin-reaches-levels-of-smoky-coal-era-30-years-ago-1.4423929

... #AirPollution
If we take bold steps to address pollution from agriculture, fossil fuels in cars, and solid fuel burning, we could save thousands of Irish lives every year. Unfortunately, the NAPCP is letting this opportunity slip by. 10/

... but the plan is not final yet. In the last consultation period, 40% of all submissions came from fossil fuel-based companies. This time, it has to be different. Submissions can be any length, and the deadline is Friday Jan 22 @ 5.30. Have your say
