When the GOP rose to hypocritically lament that impeaching Trump a 2nd time would "further divide a nation that is calling for healing” EVERY Republican who pretends to believe in that call for unity should declare the election was legitimate &Biden defeated Trump fair &square.
Why is it so important that Republicans come clean about the Big Lie? Because the myth encouraged last week's "Stop the Steal" rally & the sacking of the Capitol. That's the reason 1000s of National Guard troops had to camp inside the Capitol & close the Mall on Inauguration Day.
Republican officials knew full well Trump was lying. They knew Trump's demands for recounts &his legal team's laughable strategies would fail. The crisis now is that more than 70% of Republican voters falsely believe that there was some kind of widespread fraud in the election. A GOP that retains Trump's conspiratorial worldview is not a political party. It is a dangerous cult. Elected officials who have cynically...
...gone along with that cult's lies will not find it easy to reverse course. Will Republicans level with their constituents & tell them that Trump is lying? If they won't tell the truth about the election, they are no longer participants in our democracy. They are its enemies.
