right wing populist intellectuals are like "well, i think the child tax credit would uh recreate a robust national working class" while their constituents are like "i am getting very angry you are preventing me from murdering liberals"
There's this condescending attitude that both Republican politician and certain sections of the left have towards the types of people who say "I want to hang Nancy Pelosi because she's a child sex trafficker," which is "Oh they don't really believe it, they have other concerns"
No, they do really believe it, in some cases they are willing to risk personal harm and jail. These are not forces that can be "domesticated" and turned to more constructive ends, they are truly destructive and violent.
Intellectuals bare the blame for some of it, because they wanted to find in the Trump phenomenon some confirmation of their theories about these people, "oh they are alienated, or atomized, and so forth" well maybe so but many are also out of their minds
And this is why I don't mind the term fascism or even totalitarianism applied to these politics: because they put them in the proper context, of something unredeemable and virulent and dangerous that needs to just be defeated for any sort of good society to exist
