On this last full day of Donald Trumps Presidency I want to thank everyone who continues to call out the racist bigotry that since 2016’s “Muslim Ban” became normalised in so many right wing rags. The “new normal” was exploited all over the world. Racism rebranded as rationalism.
Trumps attempt to drag the Overton Window to the right were hugely successful. He normalised hate speech. The MSM reported what he said & suddenly it was ok. The counter reaction was powerful as people of Conscience banded together. Bonded by the shared trauma of his Presidency.
Since 2016 many of us called out this Wannabe dictator. This fascist. But so many did not. Dismissing myself and many others as hyperbolic fantasists. As hysterical left-wingers. Rather than as people who trusted what their eyes and ears told them.
If it quacks like a duck, and walks like a duck, it’s a duck. But for years we were dismissed. Because the same hate speech accelerated the agendas of groups that sort like Trump did to divide and conquer.
Because for a certain powerful section of society -if the economy is booming to the sound of short term quarterly return - then racism and bigotry can be ignored. These people are market capitalist fundamentalists who are as radical as any brain washed extremist.
As we move forward we must accept that we live now in a world of divided narrative. Where even this tweet will only be seen by those who are already part of the choir. Those who loved Trump will love the next Dictator even more. So when he comes along, make sure you call him out.
For now the return of a status quo centrist will feel like a huge breath of fresh air. But those most vulnerable to the promises of extremists will only be helped when economic reform frees them from the debt slavery and poor opportunities they have been offered.
But that fight starts tomorrow. Today, take a breath, feel the coming change, and rejoice in those that actively resisted this man who sought to destroy American Democracy.
