How to become an online English teacher (no TEFL certification required + earn in dollars)

A few people have asked me to explain how I started teaching English back in uni, so here’s a thread.

1. Make sure you have access to a solid internet connection and a laptop/ computer with a webcam + microphone

2. Create a teacher profile on either iTalki ( @italki) or Preply ( @PreplyCom). These are 1-on-1 online teaching platforms that accept people who can speak English fluently (no TEFL or degree required). Please note that there is a profile review process.

2a. I recommend iTalki for beginners since you get paid right away. Preply has a first-lesson-free policy, however, their students tend to be more consistent. I started on both and chose to stick with Preply for the constant bag

3. Make your profile as appealing as possible. You’ll be required to create a short intro video (you can film it on your phone) and a bio. Students decide which teacher they want based on your profile so make it lit 
3a. If your profile happens to get rejected. Follow their revision guidelines. Otherwise, there’s plenty of similar platforms you can try out. All it takes is a Google search.

4. Set your rates and teaching schedule. I recommend starting at $6-$8 per hour and working your way up

5. Be open to meeting new people and enjoying the experience. Your students will be of all ages from all over the world
