The report provides an overview of progress in the delivery of COVID-19 vaccinations to people who use and provide long-term care, but data is still available for only few countries (we found only 10) and often in press announcements reported by media
Review of vaccine prioritization documents shows care home residents and staff consistently listed as group with highest priority (some exceptions). Few countries include unpaid carers, people using care in community or mention people living w. dementia and learning disabilities
A warning on data on LTC population vaccination rates: there are important problems with comparability, as countries present data in different groupings, so the data in this report can only provide a broad indication of scale and is not suitable for detailed analysis
The statement that care home residents are in highest priority group does not seem to translate into practice in all countries: while in some countries initial vaccination effort was entirely directed towards care homes, this was not the case in others
So far, Israel, Denmark and some regions in Spain have completed 1st doses of vaccination of care home residents and staff. Cyprus, Northern Ireland and Scotland are close to achieving it too. In Belgium 100% of initial doses of the vaccine appear are being used in care homes
In contrast, England, Italy and USA have a broader vaccination approach, targeting health care professionals before care home residents and staff. In England the vaccination of older people living in the community has started before completing care home vaccinations
Finally, a thank you to @OurWorldInData, where you will find the most up to date data on whole population vaccination rates and that has been invaluable to help trace data for LTC populations. Contributors to future updates of the report very welcome, please DM if interested!
