HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Today marks 212 years since the birth of EDGAR ALLAN POE.

To pay homage, we will travel along the most important movie adaptations inspired by the legend of terror.

In 1934, EDGAR G. ULMER directed 'THE BLACK CAT' based on the short ALLAN POE story with the same name. BELA LUGOSI and BORIS KARLOFF starred in the film.

In 1935 LEW LANDERS brought them together again for the adaptation of another Edgar Allan Poe story, 'THE RAVEN'.

30 years later, VINCENT PRICE joined ROGER CORMAN in a EDGAR ALLAN POE CYCLE, bringing to the big screen some adaptations of his classics.

Among them are 'THE TALES OF TERROR', 'THE RAVEN', 'THE HAUNTED PALACE' and 'THE TOMB OF LIGEIA'.

A funny anecdote is that ROGER CORMAN was still able to use the castle sets from 'THE RAVEN' for a few days where they shot some movies so they improvised 'THE TERROR' (1963).

JACK NICHOLSON and BORIS KARLOFF starred in Corman's attempt to create his own ALLAN POE story.

This cycle of ROGER CORMAN and VINCENT PRICE films reached its peak with the films 'HOUSE OF USHER', 'MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH' and 'THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM'.

MARK DAMON won a 'New Star of the Year' GOLDEN GLOBE after starring in the film 'THE HOUSE OF USHER'.

In 1970, KENNETH JOHNSON directed 4 adaptations of EDGAR ALLAN POE classics including 'THE TELL-TALE HEART' and 'THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM'.

VINCENT PRICE starred in and narrated this set of stories.

ALEX PROYAS directed in 1994 another free adaptation of the story of 'THE RAVEN' by Edgar Allan Poe.

The story had already been adapted in 1935 and 1963 and this time it was a story of revenge in the contemporary era and starring BRANDON LEE. It was titled 'THE CROW'.

In 2019, ROBERT EGGERS directed ROBERT PATTINSON and WILLEM DAFOE in the adaptation of EDGAR ALLAN POE's latest novel.

Although 'THE LIGHTHOUSE' is not the official title of the novel since Poe died shortly after starting to write it in 1849.
